No, seriously. I’ve yet to meet a fellow creative that enjoys pricing their work. We of course value our time, but we’re great at being creative and sometimes the business aspect can be a bit daunting if we don’t take the time to step back and think about things from a bigger picture for a moment.
Even though I’ve grown as an individual and as two separate companies (Graham Jackson Photography over 10 years now and Linen and Lace Boudoir™ now for just under 5 years), my pricing increases have been slim-to-none over the past 5 years and have never reflected the fact that over the years, I stopped being a one-man band and I started being an employer. I now have a team of contractors that work with me on my photoshoots across my brands and with my marketing firm on large-scale commercial projects. The client work through my photography brands simply didn’t provide an income for a team as it did for a sole photographer looking to book one-on-one sessions several years ago. As my clientele discovered my higher-end content that I naturally enjoy producing with my team in our free time for our portfolio, they started requesting this content more and more in their own sessions, and referring their friends and family to have these sessions done with me and my team, and as this became more and more commonplace (these high-end, super detailed photoshoots that were far above the quality I was regularly producing for my everyday clients because I was spending three times the amount of time per image to edit each photo) quickly became what everyone wanted and as of January 2021, this quality of work will be reflected on all sessions provided by both my photography brands.
This inherently comes with more time, attention to detail during the session, and definitely more time during the editing process which is a small part of the price increase. The remainder of the price increase goes to cover the cost of my team. I take care of my Hair and Makeup Artists, and my Photography Assistants. After all, they are here to pamper the hell out of you and help give you one of the best experiences you’ve ever had in your life, to help make you feel relaxed, comfortable, and like the queen that you are, so I want to make sure that they are taken care of too. This has always been the case, but now I can make sure that I am building in pricing specifically for my team where before, it was priced for a one-person show.
I understand that this decision will prevent some clients from being unable to book a session with me but I want to make sure that I am not only providing the best experience for my clients but also for my employees and this is the best way to continue to do both!
I do offer no interest, no credit check payment plans to pay for your session if paying for it all at once is something you aren’t able to do and I will be happy to provide you any additional information on this if you have any questions at all.
Regards,
Graham Jackson
